Where to Use Colour

Friday :: Apr 30, 2010

So you want to add colour to your home but also want to keep it buyer friendly...what to do? It’s easy! Choose accent pieces when staging your home. Here are some places where colour can add a lot of pizzazz without spending a large amount of money or time.

Living Room: Neutral walls will keep this area looking bright and spacious but adding colour with artwork can make a big impact. Take down any family photos you may have on the walls and replace them with pictures that will appeal to the majority of buyers. You can find beautiful art work or wall accessories at any number of places. Make sure to check out your big box stores as you would be surprised at what you can find at great prices.

Kitchen: Counter clutter or wallpaper can distract from the functionality of your kitchen. Instead, showcase beautiful flowers or fruit on your kitchen table or counter. This will create a clean and pleasing atmosphere allowing buyers to see what your kitchen really has to offer. If you don’t want to use fresh fruit or flowers, place natural elements like a bowl with walnuts on your table or glass canisters with coffee beans and other colourful legumes in them to add colour to your counters.

Bathroom: A simple fix for a bland bathroom is towels! It may sound too simple but neutral walls with fresh fluffy towels will really appeal to buyers. You can use neutral towels or select one coloured towel to be added to the stack on the counter or hanging on the towel bar. Greenery is another great way to bring colour and life into your bathroom. Think Spa….

Bedrooms: Linens in soothing colours convey the right setting and emotion. Soft colours create a calming effect and help others envision themselves relaxing. Loud patterns or bold wall colours like red in the bedroom might deter buyers. Believe it or not, the toughest colour to sell is blue, so make sure to take that into consideration when repainting prior to selling.

Home staging with colour doesn’t have to be a hassle. Keep the big surface areas neutral (like walls and furniture) and have fun with colour accents…just in small doses!
