Is Neutral a Colour?!
Tuesday :: Apr 20, 2010
Neutral...the word is used so much in home decor that it could be a mantra. Some get tired of hearing it, but there’s a reason behind it. Research actually shows that people make a subconscious judgment about other people, their surroundings or even products in the first 90 seconds and that between 62-90% of that assessment is based on colour alone (Institute for Colour Research). It’s no wonder then, that choosing the right shade for your walls is vital!

Choosing a monochromatic (varying shades of the same colour), neutral palate for your interior helps buyers to actually see what your home has to offer instead of being distracted by hideous wall colours or busy, outdated upholstery patterns. Designate your accent colour choices to accessories. If someone really hates a vase in a particular colour you have chosen, at least it won’t drive them away! They can still picture themselves living there without wall colours clashing with the furniture they already have. Adding flowers or greenery to your tables can provide that splash of colour that you crave, but won’t scare off potential purchasers.
Principle rooms, doors, baseboards and trim see the most wear with scuff marks and nicks, so give these a fresh coat of paint. Prospective buyers frequently comment on the state of doors and neglected trim and baseboards. Refurbishing these and making the necessary changes in your home provide one more check on their “must have” list, taking them one step closer to choosing your home over another!
