Kitchen fit for a Queen

Friday :: Mar 5, 2010

In staging I find most people don’t exactly know what to do with their kitchens. It’s that area of your home that feels too lived in to look at from a buyer’s perspective. I work with clients all the time who need help in this room so I’ve put together a list of tips to get the kitchen in order.

  1. Thorough cleaning: This isn’t just your normal “Saturday clean-up”. This is overhaul clean-up. Pretend the Queen is coming over! Get appliances spotless. If a buyer opens up an oven or refrigerator and sees a mess, they will imagine it is throughout the rest of the house as well.
  2. Cupboards are often left neglected. New hardware creates an instant update for little cost. Replace broken hinges that leave them looking shabby. Make sure the doors are dazzling clean and if stained or dated consider putting on a coat of paint. Buyers will look in the cupboards, so make sure they are well organized and not over stuffed.
  3. For counters and sinks, removing clutter is a top priority. Most people leave out too many small appliances or odds and ends on the counters. Pre-pack items that aren’t used regularly to create more space both on the counters and in the cupboards. Remember…clutter shows the buyer that you don’t have enough storage space.
  4. Lastly, buyers want to see the light! Mounting lighting under your cupboards transforms your prep areas and replacing outdated fixtures will renew the look of your home.
